To help make variety selection for NC Soybean Growers easier, the NC Soybean Producers Association has developed a Soybean Variety Selector Database Tool. The information available in the OVT Data has been compiled into a single database that can be filtered, searched, and sorted.
You can filter by maturity group, herbicide technology, company, disease resistance, and more. You can also sort by yield.
Yield is reported both as the actual yield and as a percent. This is the percent above or below the average yield of all varieties in that maturity group, tested at the same locations. Yield data is available for Full Season (May planting) and Double Crop (June planting). To access the Full Season or Double Crop data of interest, use the tabs in green at the top of the tool.
We encourage users to use multi-year data (3-yr or 2-yr) for variety selections when possible. Due to the rapid turnover of soybean varieties, this is not always possible. When the multi-year data is not available for a variety of interest, use the statewide single-year data before looking at the localized OVT data. We now have a consistency rating available in the tool. The consistency rating captures the percentage of the time a variety performs in the top yield group. The consistency rating is an excellent way to access how often this variety performs well across the state.

The database has been updated with results from the 2020 OVT.

Below is an interactive tutorial showing how we would filter for all MG 4 Xtend soybeans that have some Frogeye Leaf Spot Resistance. To begin the tutorial, click ‘Start’ on the right hand side of the box below.
Here’s an interactive tutorial for the visual learners
If you’d like more info about each of the varieties in the list you can scroll back and forth across the different fields to see things such as other disease resistance, hilum color, lodging susceptibility, and more. You can also click on the link in the ‘Info’ column which will take you to the company’s tech sheet for that variety.
This is just one example of a filter and sort that can be carried out. I’d encourage you to play with the selector as you make your variety selection decisions this season.
