Over 50 farmers and sales reps gathered in Scotland Neck yesterday for a Soybean/Cotton Field Day. A foggy morning turned into a hot day but that didn’t stop us. For the soybean part, Dr. Jim Dunphy discussed variety selection and planting date. Fifteen different RoundUp Ready varieties were on display for folks to look at. Dr. Lindsey Thiessen, the new NCSU Extension Plant Pathologist, gave us a quick lesson on stem canker and talked about how to scout and manage this disease. For the cotton part, Dr. Guy Collins discussed variety selection, plant growth regulators, and defoliation.
It was great to see soybean directors John Fleming, Kenneth Bartlett, Michael McPherson, and Ben Moses and friends from Monsanto, BASF, Sepro, Meherrin, Helena, Southern States, and many others. We even had a camera crew doing some filming for new soybean production videos!
Many thanks to the Flemings and Kitchins for hosting us on their farms. Having willing farmer cooperators allows us to host successful events like this and we are grateful for all their hard work! Also, thanks to Arthur Whitehead and all the guys at the Halifax Extension office for making sure we had good food to eat and had a successful day.
